In 2010 die hard East Coast skateboarder Tino Razo moved from NY to LA. Blinded by the sunshine and healthy living of California, his search for grit, grime and meaning led him to the abandoned backyard pools dotted around the state.
Party in the Back features a selection of the thousands of photographs created in the subsequent years of discovering, learning and skating pools. At once an ode to the pool skaters devotion to trespassing, camaraderie and exploration, the collection of photographs in Party in the Back also tell the tale of the decay of the West Coast dream. All framed by the bright golden sunlight.
ABOUT TINO RAZO
After moving to New York from Vermont in 1995, mainly to study at the School of Visual Arts and ride his skateboard, Tino found himself working at the notorious Lower Eastside bar Max Fish. Tino spent the next 12 years tending bar, writing graffiti and skateboarding. When Max Fish closed its doors in 2010, he moved to LA in search of a new beginning. It was here he fell in love with hunting down and skating backyard pools... and documenting the process in photographs. The images Tino produced in this period have become his first book and led to him to exhibit in group shows across Europe, Japan and the US. These days he is still in LA skating everyday and hanging out with his French Bulldog, Chunk.
