Street Lords is photographer Peter Sutherland's love letter to New York City and a tribute to cities in general. It features 424 colour portraits taken spontaneously of friends in the streets of NYC, LA and Tokyo between 2002 and 2021.
Featuring known and unknown faces from the worlds of art, photography, surfing and skateboarding, Street Lords is an intimate "locals" eye view of New York street culture... "part of the semi-organized chaos that gives NYC that magical feeling".
ABOUT PETER SUTHERLAND
Peter Sutherland's creative practise straddles many disciplines and subjects. Primarily known for his photography and mixed media collage work addressing the relationship between nature and industry, Peter has also made an iconic documentary film about NY bike couriers, shot ad campaigns for fashion brands and published photo essays in surf magazines.
Born in Ann Arbor, claiming Colorado Springs as his home town and having lived and worked in the heart of New York for almost 20 years, Peter is particularly adept at documenting the where street culture meets the outdoors. As a keen surfer and regular in the idiosyncratic New York City surf world, his aesthetic has become synonymous and hugely influential on urban surf subculture in the 21st century. Where graffiti, skateboarding and the grit and grime of industry meet the open ocean.
